Music is the space between the notes. That’s what master pianist Debussy thought.
I find that to be the message behind the May 30 Gemini New Moon. The ruler of this New Moon—which is Mercury—still remains in retrograde motion.
To have a New Moon ruler debilitated, so to speak, means that our June story is more than superficial.
We must listen for the pregnant pauses, or dance with the stutters as we seek to find the right words on the tip of our tongue.
It makes sense, if you zoom out. In the May 16 Lunar Eclipse newsletter, we described a massive emotional exhale.
Early June is the moment after that big cathartic release. We’re prepared to inhale again and fully regain our bearings at the June 14 Sagittarius Full Moon.
But until then, we hang, we sway inside inspired interludes.
We are listening more than talking. We’re training our ears on the subtle sound of silence.
What’s that silence trying to tell us?
Let’s dive in and find out.
Compare and Critique
Being silent doesn’t mean withholding your opinion on something.
Repression often results from denying yourself the opportunity to weigh in.
But it does mean that you take a certain attitude towards your opinions. Call it “a work in progress.”
At the April 30 Solar Eclipse in Taurus, we all were given a chance at new abundance, by trying out new flavors.
We are always free to go back to our original favorite flavor, but even if we do, that OG flavor will taste so much richer if we’ve taken a walk on the wild side.
And who knows, maybe you found a new favorite flavor by trying something very outside the box!
At any rate, it’s been a month, and now this follow-up New Moon must carry the story forward.
We’ve all had “compare and critique” assignments in elementary or middle school. Read two books. Watch two movies. Critique by comparing them both.
But what if trying to compare our experiences from May is like trying to compare two completely different genres? Ah, the old problem of “you can’t compare apples to oranges.”
That doesn’t mean you still can’t compare the two. But it does modify your approach to critique…and, more importantly, the ultimate endgame.
You’re comparing but you’re withholding final judgment. That is very hard for people to do, but that’s our challenge for June.
The purpose is to really hone our observation and description skills.
We want to set aside big billboard payoffs—"ok, verdict’s in, chocolate is better than vanilla!”—in favor of something more museful. It’s going to take awhile for us to understand what really happened to us in May.
Slowly turn up the volume on your muse—really listen to the impressions forming in you. Don’t overthink by rushing towards some payoff. This isn’t like clearing your email inbox.
Sketch, brainstorm, write third or fourth drafts. But have fun.
Focus on that who what when why where and how. Focus on how your five senses are being tickled.
Gemini typically bring a lightness, and really, any hardline energy in this New Moon mostly exists at an intellectual level.
Which is great, because Gemini loves to work on riddles, puzzles and sketches.
Let’s wrap this up by giving you some ideas on how to be a better sketcher.
Carnival Sketchpad
For a couple years now, we’ve had a rather loopy June.
Things have tended to get a bit loose—I’ve described it as a boardwalk carnival by the beach.
Something rolls into town—or you roll back to your old town—and a space is temporarily transformed by whimsy and trickster delights.
This June is no different.
The New Moon is bursting with energy, and yet in some way it is contained to a tight perimeter, like that boardwalk carnival.
You can feel the energy oozing out at the edges, but it’s up to you to buy the ticket and take the ride.
And I think THAT is precisely our strategy for dealing with June’s story.
First, CURIOSITY.
I can think of few other words that better sum up the essence of Gemini.
If you linger at the entrance gate to June’s carnival, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.
It sounds a bit harsh, but giving yourself writer’s block isn’t going to help you understand what went down with the eclipses in May.
You need to stretch, get limber, sketch a few messy drafts. Trying to go straight from May to a final draft of your new emotional goals is not going to win you a Nobel.
Take the opportunity now to stumble through descriptions of what you’ve recently experienced. And the best place to stumble around, free of judgment, is a festival space—a carnival of the mind.
Second, ATTENTIVENESS once inside.
That’s another huge Gemini keyword and it goes double now during these last stretches of Mercury retrograde.
If you’re ranking the rollercoasters and carousels on a scale of 1-10 right after you hop off…I’m afraid you’re doing the whole muse thing wrong.
It’s ok if you say, “I became a different person in May…no wait, that’s a bit too soy.” Use failure to dig deeper into your descriptive muse. Be the firm but loving editor to your wandering soul.
Think adjectives. Think run-on sentences. You’re not looking for a polished masterpiece to be published in The New Yorker. You’re looking for inspired interludes—an inner notation of the grand adventure.
Walk away with a carnival sketchpad that’s bursting at the seams with disjointed lines like, “pioneer smiles rising over cotton candy peaks” and “hot labyrinths of seagulls and savory ocean breeze.”
So jump into the carnival headspace now, where you can compare apples with oranges. Look at the radical new flavors you experienced in May, and set them next to the old habits you briefly stepped away from.
You can find little nooks of observation, within your curiosity and attentiveness. The world looks so different from atop this ferris wheel.
All of these sketches will come in handy when we meet again next, for the June 14 Sagittarius Full Moon. You’ll see what this early summer interlude means.
For now, just get in there—buy that ticket!
