Relativism is a big problem these days.
And what facilitates relativism is our increasingly confused relation to public conversation.
Our current social infrastructure supports a dissolution of boundaries between truth and lies.
We’ve torn down the Berlin Wall; seen calls for new walls at the U.S.-Mexico border.
So what’s next for this New World of ours? Are we building a future—or breaking down?
Really, what faces us now is not an either/or proposition—although many provocateurs would frame it that way. Neither more walls nor less.
Let’s try a thought experiment. Say we try to reengineer social media with too heavy of a hand. We merely make the problem worse.
Only a few would hold the keys of change, putting us in a more entrenched top-down model.
Strict garden walls excite people with the prospect of punishment, should anyone get out of line.
Those who wish to be ruled over—or to have society’s infrastructure run by “experts”—would cheer such a move.
On the other hand, those who are more of an independent, open-source breed may see the machinations of a shadow administration in this move.
This is the catch-22 we find ourselves in. Oftentimes when a decision is made, it stirs up a debate that falls on Us vs Them lines.
We’ve screwed ourselves a bit, because in an epistemological sense, we’ve framed action in terms of an automatic loss. As a society, we simply don’t understand the function of perspective. If someone proposes an idea, we typically don’t critique or unpack it—instead, we converge around ideological walls.
Some party is always going to see anyone who acts as a threat to their bottom line. Hence, for example, the rhetoric of “black bodies” or “white bodies” or “elderly bodies” or “think of the children!”
Life or death framing. Thought is terminated at the threshold of hysterics.
No one likes to stand with one foot in rationalism and the other in hysteria, so relativism flourishes in this environment. People end up dancing back and forth between fact and feeling, spouting nonsense.
So our society descends into sloppy thinking. It’s “discussion of my perspective” only in name. In reality, it’s just sentimental posturing. Both trads and degenerates want to have their cake and eat it, too.
It’s dumb. It’s irritating. It’s wasteful. But it’s what we have before us.
Let’s dive into this Sagittarius Full Moon and find a Zen path out of this mental trap.
Bubble Goes Pop
Much of this wouldn’t be a problem if we collectively held truth as a virtue.
But we haven’t done that for some time now.
Ironically, as we move into a post-truth era, we can return to truth—but at a much smaller, local, tribal scale.
Society was once a cohesive, continuous unit. Not that it was global in the modern sense—in fact, globalization is what has turned the pillars of truth to dust.
But as writers like Joseph Campbell noted, many tribes and cultures throughout the world had creation myths, for example.
Often those creation myths were uncannily similar in their narrative meaning, revealing continuity in the human experience.
Under the global village, however, a strange homogenization has taken place.
Oral and literary culture has been gradually supplanted by tactile culture—a collage of surfaces and “vibes.”
It doesn’t matter anymore if a current artist really has chops or a believable origin story.
If they simply pillage the library of nostalgia for this type of clothing and that type of guitar, the homogenized global audience will take them for the next Jimi Hendrix.
This has diminishing returns, however.
Whether it’s the NFTs with crappy art that have brought the crypto market to its knees; or how the bubble butt models of Instagram have left your pretty girl next door in a state of self-conscious anxiety; either way, we live in an age of INFLATED TRUTH.
The bubble is on the very verge of popping, but as it bends under the featherweight of a pin prick, it seems like deception will win the day yet again.
That’s why we must have faith in our own eyes and ears. What is happening around your neighborhood? What are people really saying about the world when you press them?
More often than not, you’ll see these bubbles are indeed ready to pop.
Fewer and fewer in number are those who pedestalize themselves as the new gods. But even more importantly, fewer are the everyday people who will pump them with positive attention.
It’s only a matter of time then for this relativist system to fall under the weight of its own sick motto: “lol, it’s all vibes, nothing really matters.”
Purifying Fire
The unfortunate situation is that, despite no real ethical bond between us, society is still heavily interconnected.
If the false gods and the men behind the curtain go down, almost all of us will feel some effect.
But things sting more when you feel you have something to lose.
Maybe a lot of us have Stockholm Syndrome. We’ve come to fall in love with our kidnappers.
Why do we feel we have something to lose, if the dirty hands that feed us are held accountable?
This Full Moon is a big attitude adjustment.
To stick your hand in the fire of truth—and to feel pain from it—is no easy task.
But the homogenous monochrome promise of the false idols—that maybe you too could be an Instagram model or part of the new royal financial class—seems far worse.
And I believe that sentiment is catching on like wildfire.
People are ready for the fight of their lives. They’re going to act, knowing full well it brings the stupidity of the either/or response.
“You can’t say that! You can’t do that! It’s offensive to (fill in the Current Thing)!”
I think people have seen enough times that you can walk on the coals of cancel culture…and then keep walking into the horizon, towards the adventure of a lifetime.
Things are crumbling now, and within that, many feel the adrenaline of something just beginning.
A grassroots swell is building.
Will you be part of it, on your own terms?
