On November 23, we have a Sagittarius New Moon, in the very early degrees of that sign.
What is Sagittarius? The philosopher, the preacher who shouts the “good word” from the mountaintop.
It’s about optimism, because the great adventure is just getting started. There’s a horizon in sight, with more peaks to climb.
Every year around this time the Sun is here, bringing in festive cheer, Christmas music and feasts. Sagittarius is a glutton, and this old wisecracking philosopher drinks knowledge like big gulps from the party punch bowl.
The world was tight and difficult in Scorpio season—but now it is boundless, as vistas open up.
What makes this lunation particularly interesting is the presence of Mercury and Venus in Sagittarius. They’ll be traveling close together here, since they both entered Sagittarius around November 17.
Now, traditionally Mercury does not do well in Sagittarius. He would do better in the small-scale opposite sign of Gemini, where he can get his ducks in a row. In Sagittarius, he’s prone to tall tales, stretching the truth and even confusion as the scope of things increase.
Venus does ok, but in my opinion is similarly hobbled by the flightiness of Sagittarius. She makes grand gestures in love, only to forget about the agreed upon date. Details are hazy.
Indeed, Jupiter is the ruler of this New Moon, and we find him finally going direct after several months retrograde. But he’s going direct in foggy Pisces—and on top of Neptune the Fog Master, no less.
The concept that we’re chasing—the glorious optimistic future—is undeniably “there” but low resolution.
Furthermore, Mercury and Venus will harshly square Jupiter by month’s end, really putting a tailspin on all this euphoric good news. It’s like we see bright linings but then have to understand the worst is yet to come. Mars continues to be retrograde in Gemini, too, urging us to look at the fine nuances. We must avoid extreme ideological broad brushstrokes.
“It’s the end of the world!” “No, the Golden Age is here!”
What I hope to explain in this New Moon newsletter is that the answer is neither one of those extremes.
Let’s dive in.
You’ve Got to Have Faith
In some ways, this is a sneaky chart. Not a ton of explosive energy.
To me, since Sagittarius is about libraries, this means we are dealing with subtle layers of meaning. Mercury in Sagittarius almost guarantees that—and Venus will wrap this interpretive energy around our relationships.
“He loves me, he loves me not. . .” We all know that old schoolyard game, of picking petals off flowers, until the last one left gives you an answer about your crush’s intentions.
Wow, intentions are going to be so hard to read now, especially because there will be “good news” in the air and people will generally be “down for whatever.”
But in that haze, few details are nailed down—and so we’re back at where we started. You are going to see a lot of decision making go in circles this month.
Let’s watch a funny (and charming) clip of Peter Parker (aka Spiderman) asking out his crush Gwen. His trickster Sagittarian uncle kicks everything off with a white lie.
As you can see, the uncle is the archetypal “festive man” introducing two young lovers. He says to Gwen that Peter has a picture of her on his computer. This sets things up so that Peter has to prove this as a lie—but there is SOME truth to it, too.
That’s the issue with Sagittarius in general, and especially Mercury in Sagittarius. We’re looking so much at the forest, we don’t see the individual trees. Everything’s dizzy at the top as Gwen and Peter try to express their feelings in a haze of truth and lies.
Peter tells Gwen that she was just part of the forest—just a face in the Debate Team picture he took. This makes her look less than special, so he corrects and admits he was “touching stuff up.” His sexual innuendo then flips the situation entirely, like he’s putting TOO much attention on her now. She flirtatiously asks him what “touching up” means.
At this point, like good Sagittarians, Peter and Gwen are reading between the lines. The broader story is understood: they want each other. But the details? Hazy. Dizzy. Peter says, “You want to. . .uh?” To which she responds, “Wanna what?”
Peter makes a few ambiguous gestures saying nothing at all, and Gwen goes, “Sure, either one.”
Either. . .what? Was anything really established besides faith in a positive trend?
That could be us now in plans and relationships. The situation flips back and forth ambiguously, but the broader story is there. And when it comes time to make plans around that broader story, we’re like Peter and Gwen who eventually say to each other:
“Great, but I can’t right now, I’m very busy. . .another time.”
All that flighty Sagittarian energy runs away, chasing another broad vista in the distance.
Events take on a prismatic quality now, shattering in every direction, producing confusion. People scramble, because it’s not like we can work our way to a discernable outcome. And yet, in this distorted haze, we hear the piercing clarion call of the future.
How can we piece together a clear direction in the static?
Static on the Airwaves
In many ways, then, this will lead to rainchecks. You’re probably starting to see these “delays” as a prominent feature of this fall. We talked a lot about delays at the previous Scorpio New Moon/Solar Eclipse.
Now, of course, this time around the delays have a much more positive mood around them. Peter skips away like a kid at the end, and Gwen casts glances over her shoulder. This is not the Scorpio feeling of: “We’re cornered, time to fight, come hell or high water.”
There’s a sense of a gambler’s paradise here: anything can happen, but we’re generally optimistic. The data we have makes the trends around us look good.
It’s really incumbent upon us to make sure we are hearing clearly, though. Not imagining good trends because we over-interpreted the data.
Now, it’s pretty clear in this case that Gwen and Peter like each other. It’d be hard to say either is delusional in perceiving that.
However, what we don’t know from this excerpt is the longevity of the relationship (or trend). Is this a brief school crush—or is it leading to long-term exclusive dating?
Those are the kinds of questions we’re going to ask ourselves as we inevitably take rainchecks on good news in November.
Mars is retrograde, feeling impatient. And he is harshly squaring Jupiter, the festive ruler of this New Moon.
We could hastily jump to conclusions, or even simply try to push events faster than they want to move so that we get the goods right away and skip the raincheck chapter.
Good vibes are in the air and we don’t know how much longer it will stay.
Sagittarius is the last fire sign until spring (Aries Season) which is considered the cosmic New Year. Sagittarius is the bonfire or the Thanksgiving fireplace which we gather around, spreading humor and thankfulness.
The warm memories we build now will carry us through a cold winter.
I think that’s the lesson of this New Moon. Yes, I understand the impulse to act or to hastily jump to mental conclusions, just to put anxiety to rest.
But the lesson now is to kindle the fire of optimism inside, knowing with full faith that it will never leave you, as long as remember to gaze upon it, like Peter and Gwen looking at each other as they go separate ways.
