One of the best action movie scenes comes from the 1996 version of “Mission: Impossible.”
Let me set the stage for you.
Our hero Ethan Hunt is in the middle of a heist. But he can’t work alone.
Isn’t that the essence of an Aries Full Moon?
Aries is war, masculine drive, heat, sweat, independent grit.
And the Libra Sun—who is joined this year by Venus, the ruler of Libra!—is facing down this bold Moon, trying to muster some teamwork.
I think a Libra Sun and Libra Venus can do this. After all, Libra IS about balance and polarity and opposition.
So, they’ve got this Aries Moon, right? They can balance it with teamwork but let it do its own independent thing?
Well, here’s the score: Hunt has to be lowered by a rope, counteracted by the weight of his partner Krieger, who is up in a ceiling duct.
Meanwhile, since Libra often brings in a third party to mediate tension, there’s a third team member watching both of them from a neutral control room.
His job is to monitor any signals that could trigger the vault alarm: heat, sound, touch.
The only thing that can be touched is the vault keyboard, located at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
At that computer terminal there is a file that Hunt wants a copy of. So down he goes, inch by inch, dangling from a wire. Watch here, if you want:
There are problems, including whether Krieger WANTS his partner Hunt to succeed.
Sure, an unexpected rat comes along in the ceiling duct, spooking Krieger, who almost lets Hunt drop smack into the floor.
But Krieger is also Captain Butterfingers in another way, because just as he pulls Hunt back up before an agent enters the fault, he drops a knife.
Knives. Is there anything more Mars than that? Cutting action. Slicing. Separation. Independence.
The knife falls straight down, planting next to the keyboard. The agent is concerned. His independence has been tainted. He logs onto the computer. It tells him a copy of the files have been taken.
Is this a signal that the heroes have gotten away and won? Or is a signal that the heroes have their own trust issues to work out, too?
Let’s dive in.
Sensory Deprivation
What makes this scene so tense is that it predominantly exists in silence.
This highlights the neutral third team member in the control room.
He is monitoring every decibel made by the rope. He is watching every uptick in temperature caused by beads of sweat on Hunt’s forehead.
This is an amazing metaphor, because his neutrality is allowing him to watch the give and take between Hunt and Krieger.
Are they working well together—or at cross purposes?
The viewer is left to wonder, and you may feel the same now in your own life.
We’re past the September 25 Libra New Moon, when many planets were retrograde and causing us to dissolve or review relationship contracts.
Now Mercury is direct. And furthermore, after six months of dormancy, Pluto goes direct RIGHT at this Full Moon, too.
All of our senses are on high alert. We can hear a pin drop.
But that too calls into question whether we’re being perfectionist and over-attentive in our relationships.
Demanding too much of what we can’t have realistically, for instance.
Mercury in his home sign of Virgo is a hyper-efficient machine. We’re watching the decimal points on Hunt’s meter rise.
But Mercury is square Mars, the ruler of this Aries Moon.
Mercury is trying to get Mars to say something about this hyper-focused OCD.
And Mars is NOT in the mood to agree.
You see, Mars is slowing down to retrograde in Gemini, the other home sign of Mercury.
That makes facts hazy. Meanwhile, Mars is also square Neptune, so he’s passing along Mercury’s question to Neptune.
And you know what Neptune says?
“Eh, details? Whatever.”
That’s Neptune the Magician in Pisces for you. Just chilling in the ebb and flow. Facts, facts, yeah yeah yeah.
Neptune is more about feelings. STRONG feelings.
He’s an ENABLER to Mars. He says: “Are you feeling angry about the objective facts around you? Then to hell with them! Go tell those facts to take a hike!”
And that’s essentially what happens as Hunt and his partner try to find some kind of balance in their relationship.
The agent is about to enter the vault. The clock reads 10:01 AM. He’s one minute late due to an upset stomach—but not late enough.
Krieger begins to furiously yank Hunt up to the ceiling. The decibel meter is starting to max out.
“Toast, toast,” grunts the man from the control room. It’s their team’s secret password. He’s saying they need to cool it or else the alarm will sound.
But time is of the essence. They either get out loudly or risk being seen by the agent.
Facts are pushed to the limit. Feelings are starting to trump facts.
That’s this Aries Full Moon. Some independence, some impatience is going to leak out, somewhere—and one close call will be followed by another.
Some Like It Hot
Which makes me think:
Is this Full Moon fatalistic? I don’t think so. Aries is about CHOICE.
The neutral man in the control tower is like Mercury in Virgo, shouting, “Facts! Facts! Pay attention or your relationship is toast! Be OBJECTIVE.”
Hunt and Krieger ignore it and triumph—except the ego and carelessness of Krieger then jeopardizes the partnership all over again.
This Full Moon shows that free will is good—but it isn’t risk free.
Yes, paranoia is high right now, and some of it justified as you’ll see copycats and thievery of creative ideas in the zeitgeist right now.
It may be a stretch, though, to imagine that your partners are intentionally trying to sabotage you. It’s just that, again, free will comes with risk.
More likely, your partner is just hazy on the facts. And it requires open communication, both ways, about extenuating circumstances.
Does Hunt know that there’s a rat in the ceiling duct? No, he doesn’t.
And what good would it do for him to know, anyways? He can’t blame Krieger for that, and furthermore, there’s nothing he can do about it.
Mars and Aries are about acting first, thinking later. GUT INSTINCT.
And with this bizarre mix of retrogrades—Mars about to go retrograde just as Mercury and Pluto go direct—there are crosscurrents in communications.
Timing isn’t right to mention something. It’s not that you or they are trying to squirm away from honesty. It’s just that you don’t have the proper moment, or you’re waiting for more info yourself before bringing a conversation up.
Yes, it’s tense. But that’s adventure. Epic thrills. A tightrope act.
Don’t think of it as stress. This is spicing up your partnerships.
Some like it hot. Might as well be you, so you can fully enjoy the ride.
