When is a song ever done? When is a poem ever finished?
Poet Walt Whitman added to his seminal work, “Leaves of Grass,” all throughout his life.
The interesting thing is that he viewed each edition as distinct.
To him, it wasn’t an “expanded version” or “director’s cut” or any other slick marketing tactic.
Just simply and completely new.
This month, we’re called to create, which is generally the August story behind a Leo New Moon.
Step into the spotlight. Express our innermost passions. Put it all out there for the world to see.
But there’s a Whitmanesque pulse behind this challenge, complicating it.
How much of what we’re expressing to others in August is truly new versus an update of something old?
Even if you’ve been waiting to tell someone that you love them, that feeling has morphed while sitting in cold storage.
The beautiful thing is that a clear message is rising above all this chaos.
We’re being asked to embrace contradictions, even while competing data may plague us with doubts.
Let’s dive in and explore.
Master Synthesizer
A quote from Steve Jobs caught my attention this week.
When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it.
You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back.
For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through.
It might come off as the nitpicky gaze of a micro-manager, but if you look closely, it’s the mad method of a master synthesizer.
He had Mercury (thought/speech) in the sign of Aquarius—radical change, disruptive thought, rebellious action.
Aquarius is the cool counterpart to Leo, which is warm, loving, direct.
Together they can decide which parts of a system to preserve and which parts to modify.
Both signs are obsessed with quality, value, honor, legacy and personal identity.
As these two creative energies swirl together in August, we will be called to project our identity boldly, in order to create change.
Again, that raises the question: Are you importing parts of your identity from an offshore location?
Does that outsourcing compromise the integrity of your product or is it simply a necessity in our interconnected world where we aren’t surrounded with all the traditions we need to flourish?
Perhaps the only person who really cares if you mix opposing identities is. . .you.
We’ll have to get over ourselves to BE ourselves.
Especially in arenas of biz and romance, where we’ve depended for so long on reliable models. What are the rules now?
We’ll have to run out there and splice up parts like a mad motorcycle mechanic, testing the limits of “street legal.”
As you boldly express the contradictory sides of yourself, you may find that the synthesis actually reveals your SOUL more faithfully.
Break old rules to make new ones. Everything on the table.
That piece on the back of Steve Job’s wooden chest may be a bit of reclaimed barn.
It’s beautiful because he chose it not for you, but for his higher self.
Beauty is in the eye of the highest beholder.
Limited Time Offer
In the impatience we feel to project a Self—because we believe the context will punish us if we don’t act soon—we trip ourselves up.
End up projecting a false self.
In the world of instant gratification, we need to flip this demand to put ourselves in a box.
We need to let go of old expectations, and like Walt Whitman proclaim that WE are the unique limited edition.
Others can get with it—or they can leave it.
We’ll have to be careful that we aren’t creating new rules for others (or even ourselves) that contain a taste of the oppression we’re rebelling against.
Anyone who parades themselves as a Freedom Fighter but who is a Tyrant in disguise will surely be outed at the extremely shocking Aquarius Full Moon, which occurs 8/11 and which brings our August story to boiling point.
But to bring this back down to earth a bit, I think the struggle will mostly be internal.
After all, Leo reaches deep into our heart and sings: “I love you, so I wrote this song! I love me for being so creative! It’s all love, 360 degrees around us!”
The things holding us back may indeed be external: propaganda around acceptable behaviors, rolling blackouts, supply chain issues.
But the internal struggle I think will be more like a common question I get in readings:
“I’m a businessperson but I don’t love love it. And I’ve got a lot of passion for my art. Should I do business or art, Paul?”
A lot of times, these people will have a mix of Aquarian and Leo energy, letting me know that the answer is synthesized.
One long-time client would be great as an advocate in his wider community in terms of raising money for his preferred medium, since his local government only funds “refined” mediums like ballet.
He can generate so much power for himself by remaining an artist (relatable) but also using biz smarts to advocate for his community.
Who else but him could have that identity? Utterly unique.
And that’s where all of us could be by the end of August. One of a kind. It starts now. Stand up for yourself. Feel your beauty—even the hidden parts.
Cast those doubts aside. Roar!
