What a fascinating Libra New Moon we’re being given on September 25.
Occurring a few days after the Equinox, it carries the charge of autumn.
Events and relationships are rebalancing. And with six (!) planets retrograde—seven, if you count Mars slowing down—balance is coming from past deeds.
Perhaps you did a favor for someone in the past. They may show up again in your life to increase your level of freedom.
Indeed, freedom is a top currency right now—and we know how much Libra loves wealth.
What else are you going to put on the scales of Libra, other than two competing ideas?
The U.S. dollar and the Russian ruble. Bitcoin and precious metals. My feelings for you—and your feelings for me.
Typically, freedom isn’t a word that comes up in these Libran encounters. We’re looking more for parity, diplomacy, fairness, commitment, bonds.
Freedom smells too non-committal. “My girlfriend, my job, my mission. . .eh, I could love it or leave it.”
Who says that?
And yet, that’s exactly what we’re encouraged to say now, likely because BONDS HAVE TURNED TO BINDS.
I think the ultimate freedom we’ll be given is between:
-How we think we SHOULD express ourselves.
-How we truly WANT to express ourselves.
Of course, as the universe has it, this will play out in the material realm through dialogue and interpersonal conversations (I’ll touch on that in a minute).
But in the end, this is about us being able to truly embrace our “love language”—maybe even RETURN to how we originally desired to express ourselves.
This Libra New Moon is about (re)learning how to articulate what makes us feel good.
We may stumble through this process at first. Old, calcified ideas of ourselves—conditioning from society—may keep getting in the way.
But if we are steadfast, we may understand our true selves—and get better in relationships along the way.
It takes two to tango. We aren’t tangoing with others as much as TWO SIDES of ourselves. Our native tongue—and the language of self-expression we’ve learned from society.
Let’s dive in.
Getting Schooled
There’s a ton of Mercurial energy in this New Moon chart.
Mercury is about primary school or the parts of our brain that relate to reading, writing, talking, basic rudimentary logic.
This is the Gemini side of Mercury.
But Mercury also rules Virgo, which is a more “mature” sign than Gemini.
There is an air of duty and apprenticeship here. Mercury is focused less on exploring and more on differentiating between “correct” and “incorrect” or “good” and “poor.”
Virgo is the sign where a lot of societal conditioning comes in—manners, etiquette, courting rituals, employable behavior.
It has to be this way: once we get into the next sign, Libra, the zodiac signs increase in social complexity. We’re bound to others; we enter committed relationships; people and nations and churches become dependent on us.
So it’s interesting to see how much of a star player Mercury is at this New Moon—as are the two sides of Mercury, the curious messy child and the ambitious conditioned young adult.
We find Mercury in retrograde motion in Virgo. This is surely a re-examination of the behaviors we’ve been taught, that formed us as a “correct” person.
Amazingly, it sits on top of Venus, the RULER of this Libra New Moon—so we’re right in the heart of this New Moon’s meaning now.
Mercury Retrograde on top of Venus—all New Moon detective work aside—is very interesting.
We see how much of these conditioned behaviors affect our partnerships in business and in love.
Perhaps recently you’ve felt really scrutinized by partners. Or maybe you felt they overlooked a key detail important to you.
INFORMATION is our keyword here, and it seems to be either lacking or in overabundance.
Diplomatic Venus is coming in at her favorite New Moon and saying:
“Ok, we need to rebalance this situation. A correction is due. And perhaps this correction will have a paper trail connecting to events and people far in the past.”
In fact, both Mercury Retrograde and Venus sit in an OPPOSITIONAL relationship with dreamy Neptune.
Oppositions, at all times, are the energy of (re)balancing. So Venus just loves getting in here like this.
Some life lesson regarding past conditioned behaviors—and how that helped us or held us back—will now be met with the force of 1000 floods.
Neptune, the Flood Maker.
We may be offered some experience or divine surrender when we realize the scope and magnitude of this lesson.
It’s like all the puzzle pieces are falling into place, leading to this moment of epiphany. Even the errors lead us here.
A rift has appeared between how we SHOULD act and how we WANT to.
This New Moon is surely closing that gap. Let’s keep going.
The Pen & The Sword
And then we come to Mars, who is slowing down in the sign of Gemini.
This multi-month retrograde saga will be about a classic phrase:
“The pen is mightier than the sword.”
Or, we might say:
“One side of your expression will be vying for supremacy over the other.”
How very fractal! Mars slowing down in Gemini—the sign of twins—is like this whole New Moon lesson we’ve been unpacking.
We can prove this even further by noticing that Mars is insinuating himself in that divine little ping pong game between Neptune and Mercury Retrograde/Venus.
He sits in a sharp SQUARE relationship with both—as if he’s some mad referee.
This is not exactly an unbiased official.
In fact, when Mars does officially go retrograde on Halloween, he’ll still be in sharp square to Neptune (Mercury and Venus will have moved on).
That Mars Retrograde-Neptune mashup will be a rollercoaster to remember.
Surges of divine inspiration. . .followed by plunges of doubt. All news events will succumb to multiple facets of interpretation.
But in our personal lives, it will have us veering between a steady grasp of our personal vocabulary and some kind of surrender to writer’s block, where we’re at a loss for words.
The childlike energy of Gemini will get swept up easily in the floods of Neptune.
Mars is the masculine defender, thank goodness, but when he turns retrograde, we may be defenseless against such tides, good and bad.
That’s why I think this Libra New Moon is so important. It is supporting us.
Sure, Retrograde Mercury and Venus point to the pitfalls of conditioned thought and expression.
But Virgo isn’t an evil energy. It’s actually very adept at articulation.
I suppose that’s the whole forgiveness lesson happening here. In past conditioned experiences, we see a nugget of value that will carry us through now.
Those old piano lessons we were forced to take—real or metaphorical—are perfect guardrails for us now.
We can fall back on them, find our footing, and through something that once felt very impersonal, reclaim the love language that is personal to us.
I’m sure this will have us looking at past experiences and people in a new light of abundance and gratitude.
After all, this Libra New Moon itself is OPPOSITE the king of abundance, a.k.a Jupiter.
Opposite—there’s that balancing energy again.
And with Jupiter being retrograde in the very self-oriented sign of Aries, once more we are seeing that the meaning of this fall is about a RE-turn to what fills us with passion.
We’re destined to fill our cup to the brim—but, wow, are we going to tango on the way to the punch bowl. Cheers.
