Have you ever gone looking for something in particular—and ended up discovering another, more pertinent thing?
This is the essence of today’s Virgo New Moon, which kicks off our September story.
September in general marks a threshold in 2022. From here on out, the energy becomes more reflective, introspective, nostalgic.
As much as this will be dreamy, there is tension here—like the pulling back of a slingshot. A lot is being readied for 2023, when we’ll see massive change around March.
Virgo does well with all the retrograde energy we’re experiencing in September. It is a sign devoted to waning light. It feels nostalgic.
Gathering up all the ripe wheat we can, enjoying the harvest, marking the passage of time. We separate out the chaff, showing to ourselves certain experiences we don’t wish to repeat again in 2023.
If Virgo is anything, it’s this keen eye to detail.
We always look to the ruler of the New Moon to understand how it will play out. Mercury—the critical OCD master—is the ruler of Virgo.
Today we find Mercury fresh into the relationship sign of Libra, which isn’t a bad place at all for him to be.
Certainly it would seem we are finding flaws in OTHER people’s arguments these days, if Twitter is any indication.
In a more positive sense, this could also mean that we are working together with others to find a missing puzzle piece. A key way to position our business. Or what to do about that community garden down the street.
But this is merely the beginning of the quest. As I mentioned at the beginning, this is the bread crumb leading us deeper into the field of dreams.
Setting Out
Mercury is not simply hanging out there in Libra. There is more to this story.
He is slowing down, for one thing. He’ll be back at this current degree, around mid-October, during Sun in Libra season.
We are certainly just beginning to see relationships as the vehicle through which a greater quest takes place.
In fact, he will roll back into Virgo by late September, suggesting that our relationships will be subject to change, due to the detection of some chaff or error.
You heard it here first: I’m dubbing Fall 2022 the time of FORCE MAJEURE.
If you’re familiar with this concept, it frees both parties from a contract due to an “act of God” (like an earthquake) or freak accidents like a terrorist attack.
Already we’re getting a sense that individuals are being freed to look more closely at THEMSELVES rather than the other person or the task they’re working on together.
Freedom seems to be key. “Get out of jail free” card.
At this New Moon we find slowass Mercury opposing Jupiter, the planet of adventure, who himself turned retrograde at the end of July—signaling that the adventure is inward, in our hearts now.
Indeed, Jupiter sits in Aries, one of the most self-oriented signs of the zodiac. This is the home of Mars—masculine drive, external action, another questing energy of GO GO GO.
But if you needed any other indication that we’re flipping the script and going inward, Mars himself is slowing down, preparing to go retrograde in Gemini—the other sign, like Virgo, of critical puzzle pieces.
In fact, the New Moon is tightly SQUARE this Mars—incredible, almost unbelievable.
This tense SQUARE relation signals that the clue we will find with the help of others has more to do with US than with them or the matter at hand.
So don’t shy away from partnerships at all this autumn. They’re crucial for momentum.
But what exactly are these clues telling us about ourselves?
The Search for Yestermorrow
Since Mercury rules this New Moon—and we got back to Mercury’s other sign of Gemini via his opposition with Jupiter—I want to know more about him.
What’s he really doing here in Libra? What’s this scavenger hunt he’s sending us on through relationships?
Well, he sits in Libra, and that sign is ruled by Venus.
We find Venus in the self-loving sign of Leo—an energy of personal pride and heartfelt expression.
But, strangely, we find Venus square the nodes—points in space that describe our collective destiny and evolution.
The south node points to things we’re shedding, in order to grow. With the south node in Scorpio—a very alchemical, purging energy—we are witnessing through heartfelt communications how much we’ve let go of.
We see in stark contrast the self we are now and the self we were last year, or even just this past spring.
The north node points to qualities we’re embracing. In the old-fashioned sign of Taurus, we’re embracing the simple, finer parts of ourselves. We feel good about our ability to pick out a good outfit, or whip up a quality dinner, or give advice to a friend.
And all of these things didn’t happen overnight. We practiced them over time, until they just became a part of us.
This is shocking to us, because it seems to indicate that there’s nothing to really search for with other people.
Everything is right here, like the Taurus bull sunning himself in a golden field.
We see it more clearly now that the Scorpio deadwood has been peeled away.
And so in some sense, we’ve changed—but haven’t.
We’ve become more clearly who we are already.
And that is a big change, indeed. We’re moving forward into the future, through a reckoning with yesterday.
We’ve been put on a deep search for yestermorrow, and the riches are amazing.
Virgo New Moons sometimes get a bad reputation for being OCD, overly self-critical, perfectionist, finding flaws in our harvest and in the harvest of others.
But this chain of events screams utmost confidence in our harvest.
We have come to fruition in some way, like a tall piece of wheat, and the real labor now is to acknowledge and commemorate how far we’ve come to reach this point.
And ironically, we were always destined to be this capable of change.
The path of the wheat stalk is embedded from the beginning within the seed.
