This week’s snapshot is “A view from an apartment” by Jeff Wall, 2004-5.
The reason it took a year to produce is because Wall gave the woman a stipend to furnish an empty apartment, then left her alone, to get that real “lived in” feeling.
The genesis of this picture is much like the story we find inside. A woman folding laundry plays host to her guest, even though she leaves that guest alone to enjoy the distraction of a magazine and hot coffee.
Meanwhile, the port of Vancouver does its own thing in the window—bustling, undeterred.
Even a large evergreen near the window protects power lines, but electricity surges along, unbothered.
All throughout, we see protection and homeyness…and yet, detachment as well.
This week has been marked by the airy, detached, diplomatic energy of Libra.
Libra is where the First Quarter Moon fell, clashing with the nurturing Cancer Sun.
First Quarter Moons are checkpoints—the first big lunar cycle since the Cancer New Moon on June 28.
Diplomacy does kind of go with nurturing, right? Well, that’s what we’ve been figuring out.
Sometimes it can be a bit forced. Think of the host who just smothers you with coffee and questions. Or it can be a bit restrained. Think of those relationships where you’re wondering if you should bring up a tough issue. “Hey, you’re quiet over there with your magazine!”
This week we saw a nurse post a TikTok after she lost a patient. Was this a sign of nurturing herself and the rest of us who are struggling—or a bit like forcing us guests to praise her quiche recipe?
NPR decided not to read the Declaration of Independence on July 4, breaking a decades-long tradition in order to serve up a mug of piping hot “equality.”
Some found it a bitter brew, after the US no longer felt like home to many this holiday.
There were also the guests who stayed a bit too long. Climate protestors pasted their own artwork over paintings in the National Gallery—and then glued their hands to the frame.
Children visitors looked on; journalists asked questions; guards thought, “I don’t get paid enough for this shit.”
In the end, this week’s energy confronted us with mixing diplomacy and nurturing. Like in Jeff Wall’s snapshot, sometimes it’s good to just enjoy each other’s company while respectfully going to our own corners.
